I find your piece compiling and interesting to take in. My mind moves around the piece in waves going round and round looking throughout the piece to find something different and new. I like the use of textures that you have applied in the sky and also the skyline that is uprooted at the bottom of the piece. The texture on the front building is very interesting.
Some things that make me wonder what the piece might look like differently is instead of having a tree bellow a tree what would it look like with some other form or object. What would happen to the piece if instead of having that usually blue sky if you were to take it and change it to something that is not so usual.
I get a feeling of detail from your piece as though mother nature is looking down upon the city below thinking that even though once all that was trees and plants all over pieces of them still exist within the core of those buildings.
I think you did a wonderful job incorporating your different layers and pieces of your composite. I think it was clever how you flipped the tree and made roots from the same image. It would have been cool though to see the tree cut out more and include the background in the holes of the tree which would have incorporated it better. This image was very visually appealing in the subject matter you were showing and I think the vibrant colors really pulled it off and tied the work together. The only thing I could say as far as composition would be to crop the big piece out of the bottom right corner. It is a little distracting and I keep going back to it and thinking why is it there? Overall I really enjoyed this piece and think it shows a lot about your personality. I can’t wait to see what else you come up with over the semester!
Compostion-wise there are some great elements. Your use of positive and negative space, color palette and texture throughout the work brought continuity. The clarity of the pictures and the details in the city and clouds are so pronounced.
The placement of the tree, dead center, threw me off; At first glance I thought, "Bullseye". THen I started to look at the negative space that is created in the blue sky between the clouds, tree and city, interesting shapes. although it gives the impression of a still shot, there is tons of movement. The color contrast between the green tree and the red building in the bottom corner an attest to that.
Extreme detail; Loved the subject matter: city scape, blue sky and green trees that has all the makings of a great landscape piece. New tree old roots in a city, or old tree new roots in a new city with a Salvadore Dali twist. Great job.
David, This work is incredible. You seem to have an eye for digital art. Your use of photoshop is magnificent. I could almost imagine that city line being under those clouds. My favorite part about this piece is how the "roots" of the tree are rotated image of the same tree. I am not sure what was your inspiration behind the piece was but one could state that the lower tree is being killed from the smog of the city. While the upper tree is getting the fresh air from the sky around. Your use of blending the cityscape to the bottom of the picture really anchors it. The picture is so balance with that there.
The only thing i seem to have a problem with is how the upper tree has highlighted ring around it. It seem to be setting out the tree form the image, not including it into it. Though I can see how it brings the views eye right to that tree. You have to look at it. It makes it seem all powerful or heavenly. I would just like to see a different edit to compare.
This is quite an impressive landscape peice. The work is fundamentally good. The concept and major elements are excellent, but you could brush things up.
The white around the tree could have more support-- the tree's holy aura doesn't have enough elements that point to it, keeping me interested. The same goes for the tree under the tree. The main thing is you could include more things organized around the tree or expanding out of it, and it would look great, because there is a lot of great negative space to look at or work on.
