Formally, I like how you have meshed the background together to give it an interesting combination of colors and line. I can see how cutting out the clown heads would have been a difficult process considering the hair and soft appeal to them but in the future I think being more conscious about the cutting out aspect of Photoshop will help your pieces dramatically and give them more “oomph”. This piece is visually appealing to me with the difference of shapes (the lines in the background compared to the circular objects in the foreground). The biggest issue for me while looking at the piece is I am not sure what to feel about you and what your showing. I sort of want to say that it is a statement about childhood but then I think I am completely off. What are you trying to say about the clown heads and the helicopter? Or about the booster seats and juke box?
I like the way you have the placement of the jut box in the background it shows just enough to know what it is but not crowd the piece. The texture over the whole piece I find intriguing yet simple and think it adds to the piece quit nicely. I also find the tilled background works with the rest of the piece.
One thing that I wonder about is what would the faces look like if they were faded just a little bit more instead of standing out so much. It seems that they are you brightest object and dulling them down might slow down the flow and allow the viewer to focus a little bit longer on the rest of the pieces objects.
Joel, Your work is so fun to me. It makes me think of what a child's dream would be like. Helicopters flying around, Stuffed animals coming to life, and even just having other toys or objects in the background to play with. I would think that you would want to be an animationist from the work of art. If I blow the picture up I can see that, in the front, the dolls are actual photographs but I can not find an edge on them. If you cut them out you did a great job. I just wish they werent quite so crisp. The background is slightly fuzz so it would be good to see that through out the image. However the crispness does set the dolls apart from the background.
The colors on this work are wonderful as well. They just make it feel like a good time is going on. You did a good job continuing the hues into the rest of the image itself. You did a wonderful job it really got my brain moving about.
This work has a lot of exploration. I feel like the space is meaningful and I am walking into someone's personal psycho-map. First, I run into crazy midget clowns who seem to be talking to me, and then I keep going into grids and machines.
I think you took alot of risks that worked out. I like the finishing touches, like the helicopter's smile and the "dialogue box" coming from the center clown. I might change the cloud above the little clowns head because I think it covers up the machine on the left and might be flattening your image rather than making it more spacial and airy.
I think you did a good job masking the clowns their edges and soft and transist very nice into the rest of the image. I like how you incorporated the pink through out the image from the clowns to the background images. I feel like there could be a little more depth here. If the helicopter layer was moved in front of the grid it wouldn’t feel so flat. This would also create more contrast because the helicopter would stand out more and bring out some darker tones. This is making it easier for your eye to follow around the image and not just staying on the clowns.
